Sevanna Carrington: A Journey of Heritage and Artistic Expression
Born on January 1, 1999, Sevanna Carrington is a passionate artist and storyteller rooted in her rich cultural heritage. As the fourth child in a family of seven, she was raised in Warrarmurn (Warmun), where she has lived her entire life. Sevanna began painting at the age of eight, using traditional ochre paints to express her connection to her ancestry. Now at 24, she continues to create, drawing inspiration from her mother, Charlene Carrington, as well as her grandmother Sade and great-grandmother Betty Carrington, all of whom are respected artists in their own right. Sevanna’s artistic themes are deeply intertwined with her identity. Her mother, a Gija woman, hails from Texas Downs Station, located northeast of Turkey Creek, while her father is from the Derby region and belongs to the Ngarinyin clan. This dual heritage enriches her work, allowing her to explore the stories and landscapes of both her maternal and paternal cultures. As a proud mother to her four-year-old daughter, Meira, Sevanna takes joy in passing down her cultural knowledge and artistic passion to the next generation. Her artwork reflects her connection to Ngarrgooroon country and celebrates the vibrant traditions of her people. Sevanna Carrington stands as a testament to the power of art as a medium for storytelling, cultural preservation, and personal expression, inspiring those around her to honor their own heritage.
