Connected by Water

2 October - 1 November 2026
Overview

From the striking pink lakes of Meningie, SA, to the shimmering salt lakes near Uluru, the winding waterways that flow to the vast inland lake of Paruku (Lake Gregory), wildlife-rich rivers of the East Kimberley, the saltwater country of North East Arnhem Land and the coastal reaches of Far North Queensland, the six artists featured in Connected by Water evoke landscapes of profound cultural and environmental significance.

South Australian artists Melanie Koolmatrie and Janice Stanley, East Kimberley artists Susan Peters Wangamirr Nampitjin and Janet Dreamer, East  Arnhem Land bark painter  Muluymuluy Wirrpanda and Bentick Island's Amanda Gabori interpret their countries in distinctive ways. Here, they are united by compelling interpretations of the rivers, lakes, seas, salt pans, wetlands, waterways and plants which shape their ancestral landscapes. Their paintings speak of memories, identity, Country and enduring cultural connections, inviting us to see water not simply as landscape but as a living repository of stories and knowledge.
