Claude Carter grew up in the Gija and Gooniyandi country of his parents. He spent time working on stations in the area, until he settled with his growing family on land excised from Bohemia Downs Station. He is strongly committed to his responsibilities as one of the principle custodians of his country, his painting practice is an extension of this desire to keep country and culture strong. This work depicts Goonboorooru Waterhole and cave, a deeply powerful and culturally significant site for the Gooniyandi People of the Fitzroy River Valley. Goonboorooru is in the limestone country near Fitzroy Crossing in the West Kimberley Region. This series of works are painted from a planar perspective and looking deep into the water and the land formations. Kaliru the rainbow serpent wends his way through this site, though he is not shown figuratively in the works. The small rectangular shapes and the lighter coloured dots in the works are rocks, the Kaliru has crushed as he passed along them. The geometric patterns in the work are representation of the limestone outcrops and hills in the area.
