Little Bit Long Way : Fundraising exhibiiton | Woodleigh School
An extensive exhibiton of more than 80 paintings, ceramics, barks Save & closeand carvings from 22 arts centres from around Australia. The aim of the exhibition was to raise funds from sales of works for travel costs for elders and students from the North-East Arnhem Land Miwatj region and the Eastern Desert's Ampilatwatja community to visit the Peninsula and engage with the Woodleigh community of students, parents and teachers.
Since 2008 Woodleigh School has supported students from Arnhem Land and the Eastern Deserts to travel to Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula to participate in cross cultural exchanges and educational opportunities. Elders in both communities want their children to have these experiences, however funding cuts by the N.T government meant the planned trips for 2013-14 needed to be cancelled.
20% of sales of works from Little Bit Long Way was donated to the School's Indigenous programme to enable elders and students from remote regions to engage in these life changing opportunities. Two artists from Buku Larrnggay Mulka centre, East Arnhem Land were also funded by donors to travel to the Peninsula to participate in the exhibition. Sales from the exhibition were very successful and the event also attracted significant donations, such that sufficient funds were raised for travel costs for Indigenous participants to visit the Peninsula in early 2015.
