Tjinkuma Wells was born in Pukatja, outside on the ground, with all the grass and stones. Her father is senior artist and respected Elder Ginger Wikilyiri from Tjungu Palya. Tjinkuma grew up in Pukatja and went to school there. As a teenager, she ran away from school to get married and later qualified to be a teacher. Tjinkuma worked at Ernabella School for many years.

Tjinkuma moved to Adelaide and worked at Woodville High School in St Clair, Adelaide for 3-4 years. She has painted at APY Studio Adelaide since it opened in 2019.
