Pareip: True Spring

Overview

In the Bunurong seasons, Spring has three distinct sections: early Spring (August-mid September); mid Spring (mid September-mid October) and late or "true" Spring (mid October-mid November). The word for all is Pareip.

This exhibition brings together more than 40 works of art from five regions across this continent featuring plants, wildlife and Country in celebration of Pareip (True Spring).

Ernabella artist Jeffrey Lewis insightfully captures the characters of the birds of his community with panache, as does Bunurong elder Mark Brown. Lyrically detailed, plant-filled landscapes by the Artists of Ampilatwatja relate the country on which their Dreaming stories sit.  Talented Mimili Maku Arts newcomer Beverly Downs paints the trees of her lands in sweeps of brilliant colour, while Anita Pumani and Betty Mula's glowing works bring to life the plants and dreaming stories of their Country with skilled assurance.

Utopia artist Carolyn Petrick Kngwarreye's shimmering seed dreaming works mesmerise with layers of fine dots and Selina Teece Pwerle's high-keyed canvases depict the rivers, landforms and red sands of her grandfather's Country with the knowledge born of a lifetime's observation.
