This is Arnold's ancestral country of Malara near the WA, SA and NT borders between Uluru and Pipalyatjara.
Arnold Teamay was born and raised in Kaltukatjara, the Pitjantjatjara community of Docker River which lies in the Petermann Ranges west of Uluru. His father is well known painter and spokesman for Uluru, Malya Teamay and his aunt is the late Niningka Lewis. She created a body of work illustrating both Malara's ancestral and contemporary history as an outstation for their family.
It is a place of significant Wanampi Tjukurpa. Wanampi are powerful water serpents which inhabit and protect water holes. They are evidenced at Malara by the rock formation to the north of the homestead. In the Creation Time, a group of Wati Liru or poisonous snake men marched in battle across the lands as far afield as Uluru and Kata Tjuta. They arrived back in Malara in human form and rested for a while before becoming Wanampi and disappearing into the ground.
