David Wickens grew up in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, he has travelled extensively throughout Northern and Central Australia in an old Land Rover he built in his former career as a mechanic. Settling in the Northern Territory in 2011 David has been involved in many aspects of the vibrant arts industry, both as an arts worker and a practicing artist. His time living in remote communities and working closely with indigenous artists gives David a unique and broad insight into the cultural practices and artistic styles present within the greater northern Australian region.
Working with Injalak Arts in Gunbalaya from 2014-17 as assistant manager David worked with indigenous artists and stakeholders to ensure the best and most ethical outcomes for artist, art centre and community. More recently David and his family have relocated to Yirrkala in far North East Arnhemland to work with Buku larrngay Mulka art centre.
His recent work celebrates this environment, of Yirrkala, the central community of the Yolngu artists he works with.
He captures the essence of the place and its feel in this landscape of the typical coloured houses of Yirrkala.
