Gurrwiliny Yolngu : People of the Arafura Wetlands
"All Aboriginal people originate from a spiritual source, fixed in a particular place in their land or the sea. These ‘spiritual reservoirs’ are often in the form of special waterholes made by Wangarr (creative spirits) that were created long ago close to the beginning of time. These creator beings moved across the countryside, shaping the land and implanting in each tract of country, the spiritual life force for the people who were to own it. These creative spirits took many forms and when they gave the land to each group, they also gave songs, dances, ceremony, the associated laws and language."
The artists of Ramingining
Everywhen Artspace is delighted to present Gurrwiliny Yolngu - the first exhibition to be held in Victoria for many decades by the artists of Bula'bula Arts, Ramingining, Arnhem Land.
Made famous in the film Ten Canoes and by the Aboriginal Memorial of 200 ceremonial poles in the National Gallery of Australia, the art of Ramingining has had a long and illustrious history.
Backgrounded by an ancient tradition and a modern art history dating from the 1930s and 40s, which has lead to the art of their forebears being held in the highest esteem in Australian art, here,18 talented painters and weavers of Bula'bula Arts have created a body of detailed paintings and beautifully woven natural fibre mats and bags. All relate the timeless stories of their Country's extraordinary freshwater floodplain - the Arafura Wetlands.
