Mimili Maku Arts Pop Up!: New works by Anita Pumani, Betty Tjulpukuna Campbell and Josina Nyarpinka Pumani
Vivacious new works by three talented Pitjantjatjara artists from Miimili Maku Arts in the APY Lands. The younger artists Anita Pumani and Josina Nyarpingka Pumani are cousins born in 1982 and 1984 respectively. Their grandmother, Kunmanara (Milatjari) Pumani, was one of two founding artists of Mimili Maku Arts with her daughter the late Nguplulya Pumani (Josina Pumani's mother). Their aunt, Betty Pumani, won the Wynne Prize in 2019. Josina started painting in 2009 and Anita several years later. Both have established significant art careers.
The older Betty Tjulpukuna Campbell was born at Mimili in 1961. A strong cultural leader and teacher at the Mimili School , she started painting with Mimili Maku Arts in 2022 - her work immediately attracting strong attention from collectors and art enthusiasts when she first exhibited in 2022.
All three paint the women's ceremonies and stories for Antara - the large Indigenous Protected Area close to their community, and which they care for and visit regularly.
