Kunmanara (Pepai) Carroll was a leading artist of Ernabella Arts in the APY Lands.. He painted the country in which he was born in the far western desert around Kintore. This painting is about a place called Ilpili is near Kintore on the way to Mount Leibig and Papunya. This is a miniyma kutjara (two women) story. Two women are sitting down at a rock hole telling stories. A wati (man) was sitting down behind a puli (boulder) watching the women. This is part of the Seven Sisters story. In April 2017, on a journey back to that country, Pepai visited this site and the rock hole.
Having had a stellar painting career since he commenced making art in 2009 following his retirement as a community police officer at Ernabella, Kunmanara Carroll's work was exhibited in select leading private galleries throughout Australia and internationally as well as in public gallery exhibitions. His work became highly sought after by collectors.
His work is held in public gallery collections including the Art Gallery of NSW, Art Gallery of SA, National Gallery of Victoria and Parliament House, Canberra.
This painting is one of the last Mr Carroll painted before he passed away in 2021. It is the only painting still owned by the family of the artist at Ernabella Arts and is exhibited here for the first time. See below for comparative prices of Mr Carroll's works on the secondary market in 2022.
