Born in Derby in 1980, Lloyd Kwilla is the son of the late Billy Thomas (Karntakarnta), a painter, medicine man and senior Lawman from the Great Sandy Desert. Kwilla spent most of his childhood at Wangkatjungka community on Christmas Creek Station where he acquired a love of the landscape that surrounded him, and an intimate knowledge of its secrets
The artist has spent most of his life living in his traditional country on the Northern fringes of the Great Sandy Desert, Northern Western Australia. His father Billy Thomas (Karntakarnta) has taught him a great deal about land and its features. This painting shows a small waterhole close to the Canning Stock Route called ‘Kulyayi’, all around are sandhills (Tali), that are ablaze with wildfire.
