Kani Patricia Tunkin
78 x 78 3/8 in
This is the Kanpi area, the land of the emu. The emu’s have walked all over this country searching for food, dancing (Inma - ceremonial dancing), and the emu chicks were following. There are lines in the rocks which have been worn over time by the emu’s running down them. My grandfather showed me this place. We climbed up and he told me the story about the kalaya (emu).
In this country there are many wild plants that the emu’s eat. There are creek lines and rock holes. Tjukurpa mulapa. Ngayuku tjamuku ngura, paluru ninti pulka (this dreaming is real, it is my grandfather’s country and he had great knowledge for this place).
Kani’s family were living at Kanpi when she was born in Alice Springs hospital in 1981. She went to school at Murputja the school for Kanpi and Nyapari and later completed her high schooling at Wiltja in Adelaide. Her mother’s place is Kanpi and her father’s country is Yalata. She believes that cultural knowledge is very important to pass on to the younger generation just as she has learned from her mother Kay Baker and her grandfather Jimmy Baker.
