Jaru/Walmajarri artist Biddy Timbinah was born in the Western Desert at Kiwirrkurra in the 1920s. As a child with her dad, three mums, sister and brother, she walked 1200 kms from there to Sturt Creek Station near Halls Creek. They lived there for many years and later at Old Flora River station, where Biddy worked as a maid in the station houses.
She arrived to live in Halls Creek in 1973 and in 2007 started painting with Yarliyiil Arts. She painted her country and the stories of when she was young. In 2012 she won the Mid-West Art Prize bin Geraldton for the overall award of excellence & the best work by an Indigenous artist at the Port Hedland Art Award. Her work is in the collection of the Art Gallery of WA and the city of Greater Geraldton Art Collection.
This painting represents the leaves of the Koongaberry tree. It was used a licensed design by Headsox for their multi-functional, seamless head and neckwear tube designed to protect from the elements in the great outdoors. Since Biddy has passed away, 10% of the purchase price from this specific design goes directly to Biddy Timbinah's family to honor her artistic legacy.
