Warlpiri artist the late Emma Nungarrayi Daniel lived in Papunya for many years and became recognised as part of the Papunya Artists Movement during the 1970s and 1980s. A highly respected elder, she was a Traditional Owner of Karrinyarra, Mount Wedge and carried extensive ceremonial knowledge of storytelling, song, and dance. Her work was widely exhibited in leading private and public galleries 2003-2016 and is in the collections of The Australian Museum and AGNSW.
The work represents Karrinyarra, Mt Wedge. Ceremonial dancing women feature strongly in Emma's paintings. She used the brush with long flowing brush strokes the way the women do when they paint their bodies. As this painting demonstrates, Emma specialised in the vibrant use of colour.
