Billy Tjanmpitjinpa Kenda belongs to the Mwerre Anthurre Artists art centre, an Alice Springs based centre which was formed under Bindi Inc., a company which provides work opportunities for disabled people. Mwerre Anthurre means ‘everyone working happily together’, and it is under this philosophy that its major artists have emerged: such as the late Billy Benn Perrurle and the young star, Kukula McDonald. Mwerre Anthurre art is instantly recognisable for its medium of painting miniatures. Evolving from Billy Benn’s early use of using furniture offcuts and scrap wood for painting landscape, the studio has become a school of artists expert in rendering the open, vast Central Australian landscape onto a small surface area. Billy Kenda’s father is a Ngaatjatjarr man from Docker River, a place heavy with deep religious significance. His mother’s country is in the West MacDonnell Ranges, those majestic hills that tourists and truck drivers travel along, stopping at sites along the way. Kenda paints this environ with a fascination, sense of humour, and observational focus. His paintings are landscapes enduringly, a continuation of the Namatjira school painted in his own individualistic way.
