Charles Blackman

Paper Size: 88 x 92 cm
This image is taken from a large oil painting from the early 1960s. When Barbara was hospitalised with "first motherhood" in 1957, she began to knit her own bedspread. Each brilliantly coloured woollen square was a badge of her achievements and a visual feast against failing eyesight and immobility. Beneath the chequered cover she was safe in the womb of her own dream, away from the turmoil of the outside world. The painting was first exhibited in an exhibition of Charles Blackman's work at South Yarra Galleries, March 1964.
This Artist's Proof from the Blackman Family Collections, is from the Masterwork Series by Charles Blackman and published by the Charles Blackman Foundation in acknowledgement of Charles Blackman's 90th birthday in 2018 in an edition of 190.
