Alison Munti Riley was born at Ernabella (Pukatja) c 1975 and is a leading mid generation artist of the APY Lands. She grew up at Pukatja and lived there until 1990 when her family moved to Amata, another community in the APY Lands. She learned to paint and make batik at school at Ernabella and then with Ernabella Arts and continued her artistic career from the mid 2000s at Tjala Arts while living at Amata. Her work developed in fluency and vitality as she developed her already well honed artistic skills while working with Tjala Arts and became noted for its glowing colours and impressive design, quickly becoming highly sought after when shown in leading galleries around Australia. From 2013 to 2014 she returned to her birthplace of Ernabella. Established in 1948, Ernabella is the oldest art centre in Australia and is well known for representing the work of painters, ceramicists, weavers and batik makers of top quality. Alison’s work often references her memories of the country before the days of grasses such as the invasive buffel grass came to dominate the land, killing off native grasses. 'Our country used to have all good flowers, when we walked in the bush looking for tucker our feet would be covered in yellow and green, purple, lots of colours you know. When we go out now we look for those good flowers and we think back and it makes us sad. Even the birds are still looking for those good flowers, and the ants are looking for those good flowers.'
