Nora Wompi Kukatja, b. 1935
31 1/2 x 47 1/4 in
Nora's work depicts her traditional country near Kunawarritji Community (Well 33), far to the south west of Balgo along the middle stretches of the Canning Stock Route. While the lineal patterns in the painting represent the tali (sand hills) that dominate this country, the circular shapes represent the scarce rockholes (waterholes) dotted throughout the desert. According to Nora, this is good country for collecting bush foods including pura (bush tomato) and kantjilyi (bush raisin). Through this beautiful painting, Nora tells of her country and its ability to give and sustain life.
