Bugai Whyoulter Purungu, b. 1939
29 1/8 x 29 1/8 in
This painting depicts Wangkakarlu. Wangkakarlu is a special meeting place to the southeast of Parnngurr Aboriginal Community, where large numbers of Martu people gather for ceremonies. Bugai lived nomadically, with her family, for a lot of her life, travelling extensively around the western desert from her birth place near Balfour Downs Station west of Parnngurr right up through Jigalong, the Canning Stock Route and up to Well 33 (also known as Kunawarritji) where she now lives. She had been around Wangkakarlu with the Yubena family a long time ago. Bugai says she was a big girl and used to play with fellow artist Marjorie Yates' mother. There is a yinta (rockhole) there with a jila (snake) who lives in it. Bugai says you need to light a waru (fire) to keep him down. When the other claypans and yintas in the area overflow with water, the runoff ends up here.
