Wati Wangka
34 5/8 x 60 1/4 in
In 2006 Wati Wangka, a senior Kaltjiti artist, began acrylic painting. His naive style captures the mystery of Tjukurpa in the landscape. His thematic focus is the Ngintaka Tjukurpa, the Perentie lizard songline, as it traverses the region within sixty kilometres to the east and west of Kaltjiti. This painting depicts a part of the Perentie Lizard story where Wati Nyiru, a shapeshifting magician, sings songs of sorcery creating black magic to prevent Wati Ngintaka travelling through the Musgrave Ranges. But Ngintaka makes it through to his home in the west. This work is reproduced in Diana James, Painting the Song; the art and artists of Kaltjiti Arts, McCulloch & McCulloch Australian Art Books, 2008
