Artist's statement: 'The Chillagoe caves, outside the township of Chillagoe West of Cairns, lie within the Limestone Belt. An area I travel to on a regularly pace and much of the inspiration for my painting comes from. In this painting the interest lies in the Cave walls deposits called Speleothems. Travertine and Tufa are terrestrial sedimentary rock deposits. Depending how its formed the deposits appear more porous or smoother. My paintings reflect the textured surface of the walls within the caves of Chillagoe."

Claudine Marzik is a visual artist based in Far North Queensland who has exhibited widely throughout Australia and internationally since 2001. Her awards include the painting prize in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize, 2013. Her work most often represents the flora and landscape of FNQ, in paintings, drawings and installations which reflect both her intimate observations of, and strong concern for the environment.
