The series of Avignon rings were made in Provence and Côte d'Azur, France in May 2025 after visiting the Musée de Petit Palais in Avignon, which has an extensive collection of 13-16 century paintings and sculptures including funerary monuments from 12-15 centuries (of which my personal highlight was a plaster full sized skeleton laid on the floor).
During my time in Provence I visited medieval villages including Fontvieille, Les-Beaux-de-Provence, Château des Beaux-de-Provence, Eylgalières, Fontainebleau-de-Vaucluse and Gordes, as well as the ancient city of Marseille.
The presence of the medieval human history of these places is palpable, in the ancient streets, buildings and churches, and I began making this series of rings in a little village called Pernes-les-Fontaines, then Avignon, and Saint Paul de Vence. Avignon is an ancient, medieval walled city known as the City-State of Popes.
These places have a history of artists and sculptors, whose presence I felt walking their streets and visiting the galleries and museums, and whose personalities came out into the rings.
