Sonia Kurarra is a senior and award-winning artist from the Fitzroy Crossing region of the Kimberley, WA. She grew up in the river country at Yungngora (Noonkanbah). She began painting on paper, and later canvas at Mangkatja Arts, Fitzroy Crossing in the early 1990s, and her practice has really flourished since 2008. She has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions and there was an overwhelming response to her first solo show in 2009. Her work is held in a number of public and significant private collections. In 2010 she was the winner of the Western Australian Artists award of the nationally-based WA Indigenous Art Awards.

Central to Sonia's theme is the sandy billabong country along the stretch of the Fitzroy River that runs directly behind her community. After the floodwaters recede, the billabongs hold a plentiful supply of parlka (barramundi, (Kurlumatjari (catfish) and bream.

Shown in her work are gapi (fish) parmarr (rocks where fish are cooked), ngurti (coolamon) and karli (boomerang). She paints these subjects over and over as though they are etched into her psyche. Sometimes her images are linear in monochromatic tones and others are layered with wild and confident brush strokes.

These contemporary compositions display an outstanding understanding of colour while conveying a great love for and knowledge of her country.
