Pepai Jangala Carroll
Kunmanara (Pepai) Carroll was a leading artist of Ernabella Arts in the APY Lands.. However he painted the country in which he was born more than 1000 kilometres away in the far western desert around Kintore (Walungurru).
In this painting he related the story of the rainbow serpent (Wanampi) who created a huge and important rock hole creation site, near to his birthplace. He said of this painting: "The Wanampi is looking for that man. He did the wrong thing and he is running into sand hill country. The Wanampi made that road and he brought the water with him. There was no water here before, but it is still there now."
In April 2017, on a journey back to his country of birth, Mr Carroll visited Walungurru and this rock hole.
Having had a stellar painting career since he commenced making art in 2009 following his retirement as a community police officer at Ernabella, Kunmanara Carroll's work was exhibited in select leading private galleries throughout Australia and internationally as well as in public gallery exhibitions.
Mr Carroll passed away in 2021 and his work has became highly sought after by public galleries and private collectors internationally since.
