Joyce Nyurupayi McLean was a senior painter from the NPY Lands of Western Australia. She was born near Lapaku in the bush. One of her main painting subjects is the Seven Sisters Dreaming story from her home region around Blackstone near the WA/SA border, as well as the subject of this work - Lapaku tjukurrpa (dreaming) . This tells of a creation event when the Warrmalla men from Karilwara way were throwing spears across a creek at the Lapaku Tingari men.
McLean worked through the Warakurna Artists Wanarn Tjilpi (senior men) and Pampa (senior women) Painting Program.
Warakurna Artists works closely with Wanarn Aged Care Facility to conduct painting sessions with elderly patients. This program nurtures artists who have arguably contributed largely to one of the most significant art movements in Australia. The joyous communal activity has a myriad of positive benefits such as relieving boredom and frustration.
