The most expressionistic of the founding group of Lockhart River painters, Samantha Hobson!s works have always been both highly contemporary and strongly individual. Her themes have included emotionally-charged paintings representing the contentious issues of community and domestic violence and the drama of a burning land. As well, Hobson!s love of, and representation of, her coastal Sandbeach country is evident. Some of the most lyrical of the aspects of this are her paintings of the rocky offshore reefs, and the movement of the waves passing over them. As here, Hobson often takes both an aerial and silhouetted perspective - waves seen breaking over the reef surrounded by a deep blue sea beneath.
