The most expressionistic of the young group of Lockhart River painters, Samantha Hobson!s works have always been both highly contemporary and strongly individual. Her themes have included emotionally-charged paintings
representing the contentious issues of community and domestic violence and the drama of a burning land. As well, Hobson!s love of, and representation of, her coastal Sandbeach country is evident. Some of the most lyrical of the aspects of this are her paintings of the rocky offshore reefs, and the movement of the waves passing
over them. As here, Hobson often takes an aerial perspective - waves seen breaking over the reef and the deep blue sea beneath.
