Biography

Eileen Tep is a Jirrbal woman of the Davidson Road area. She lives at the Jumbun Community near Murray Falls, north-west of Cardwell. She is a skilled weaver and ceramicist.

Eileen Tep works within the Art Centre of Girringun, a small town 200 km south of Cairns, in Queensland. The Bagu were originally fire boards. They were traditionally made of two parts, the Bagu (body) and the Jiman (stick) . These objects had a sacred value due to the torrential rains which used to fall on a regular basis in this tropical region. Aboriginal people from Queensland gave these boards an anthropomorphic shape in tribute to the spirit of fire, Chikka-Bunnah.
