Amanda Jane Gabori Kayardild, b. 1966

Overview

Amanda Gabori is the youngest daughter of the late painter Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori (c.1924-2015) . Born in  1966 in the township of Gununa on Mornington Island. Amanda started painting with her mother in the early 2000s as she " saw how much pleasure painting brought her mother and how her mother had loved that, through her paintings, she could relate the stories and landscape of her sea country and its people around the world". .

Since 2010, Amanda has exhibited in leading private galleries around Australia, as well as  public galleries including Cairns Art Gallery, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art and in the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair. Her main painting themes are those of her mother and father's  Country of Bentinck Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria. In her work Amanda depicts its striking rock formations, tidal waterholes, its sweeping lands where the sky meets the sea, and the scales that cover the body of the small river cod, Dibirdibi which is her language name and her totem given to her by her father.

Biography

"I was born in the township of Gununa on Mornington Island at the old hospital which is now the Council Office. I am one of 10 children. I went to school here on Mornington island and then went to Atherton State School to complete years 11 & 12.  "I have 4 children and 2 grandchildren. I started painting when I was just sitting at home and wanted to go up and join my mum painting as she was really enjoying it. I paint my Country on Bentinck Island and Dibirdibi which is my language name and totem given to me by my father. Dibirdibi is the small river rock cod. I like to paint the scales that cover his body."
