Charles was prolific with his drawing skills. In the early 1950's he often travelled with his wife Barbara to the St Kilda Baths and sketched the swimmers there. This is a dynamic composition of a diver superimposed over the placid waves of the bay of Melbourne, with a jetty of rocks on the horizon. This work is significant also for being one of the series that first brought Blackman's work to wider attention - not least because of the public controversy caused after Melbourne Herald art critic Alan

McCulloch praised Blackman's exhibition that included swimmers for its 'power and artistry.'
